Explore the legends that shaped our identity and the truths that ground it.
The Boar That Made a Clan
Reality: This tale echoes origin stories from other clans such as Turnbull and Campbell. While evocative, there is no contemporary evidence. The boar symbol appears in Baird heraldry centuries later, and some versions even suggest it was a bear, not a boar.
Myth: The first Baird saved King William the Lion from a wild boar, earning land and status.
The Chief That Never Was
Reality: Though locally regarded as Chief, the Lyon Court never officially recognized him. The undifferenced arms of Auchmedden were not matriculated after his death in 1775, which left the clan armigerous and without a legally recognized chief.
Myth: William Baird of Auchmedden was the rightful Chief of Clan Baird.
One Tartan to Rule Them All
Reality: Tartans were not clan-specific until the 19th century. The idea of a single uniform is a Victorian invention. Today, Baird tartans exist in multiple colourways including Ancient, Modern, and Muted. These reflect personal and ceremonial preferences rather than rigid tradition.
Myth: Clan Baird has one ancient tartan worn by all members.
The Eagles of Auchmedden
Reality: This is a cherished local legend with symbolic weight. Though unverifiable, it reflects the deep connection between land, lineage, and lore in Scottish tradition. There are issues, the least being Thomas the Rhymer lived 200 years before Bairds owned Auchmedden.
Myth: Thomas the Rhymer prophesied, “There shall be an eagle in the craig while there is a Baird in Auchmedden.” When the Bairds lost the estate, the eagles vanished. They returned only when a descendant married back into the land.
The Bairds Are A Lowland Family
Reality: Baird has Gaelic roots both in the Lowlands, Ayrshire, and the Highlands. It is also has lowland branches. It is incredibly reductive and is used to drive a identity politics to claim they are a Lowland family. The Bairds straddled both worlds, much like families that live along any border in any country
Myth: Clan Baird is a lowland family or clan.
